Serving on the VRPS Board of Directors

Serving on the VRPS Board of Directors is a meaningful way to shape the future of our profession and give back to the community that supports us all. Our board focuses on strategic leadership, setting a clear vision for the Society and working intentionally to enhance the parks and recreation field through our shared goals.

To ensure our leadership reflects the vibrant communities we serve, we focus on cultivating a diverse board of qualified individuals who are deeply committed to the goals of the Society. When reviewing candidates, we look for key qualities that support a strong and inclusive board, including:

Availability to fulfill the responsibilities and time commitments.

A strong sense of vision for the future of the Society.

Past service to the Society and the parks and recreation profession.

Professional certifications and qualifications.

Current VRPS membership
Understanding the time commitment helps ensure our board members are set up for success. Leadership service involves:
VRPS members serve a two-year term starting on January 1. Board members may be renewed one additional term with the possibility of further extensions limited to those serving on the Executive Committee.

Regular Meetings: Four board meetings per year, each lasting between two and three hours. Hybrid attendance options are available.

Annual Retreat: The first meeting of the year is a one and a half day retreat, meals and lodging expenses are covered by the Society.

Annual Conference: One additional financial planning meeting is held in conjunction with our annual conference.

Executive Committee: If you serve on the Executive Committee, there are four additional meetings per year, each lasting one to two hours.

Board Orientation: A virtual orientation meeting is held annually to help welcome and prepare our team.

Liaison Roles: Board members serve as liaisons to two or three of our Service Areas, Resource Groups, or Committees. In this role, you are expected to attend their meetings and events as much as possible and be prepared to bring important matters from those groups back to the full Board of Directors.
- Board members are also encouraged to be active and engaged members of the Society, attending in person and virtual events as their schedule allows.
